Problems And Solutions
We have been thinking about all the problems we would have if we lived on another planet. Our task was to choose a problem and make up 3 solutions to it. The problem I chose was No Air.
One solution is a suit. This suit sucks in the poisanus gases and automatically turns it into oxygen so you can breath!
Another solution is to have a massive dome. The dome is filled with oxygen. So you don’t need to wear an suit.
One last solution is that you could change a part of your body to make not need oxygen. Instead of making it you could just not breath oxygen!

Christmas
Christmas is nearly here. There’s only 13 days to go to! I CAN’T WAIT!!!
This year we might be having a UMU and breakfast at my Nana and Papa’s house! An umu is like a Tongan hangi! My cousin had told my other cousin and I, that we were going to have a hangi. But he lied!
We also might go to my aunty’s new house to see my little cousin Tahu, and open some of our presents of course! I love visiting my aunty and cousin’s because the house is sooo big and the bottom room is cool. It's also bright and it’s really nice.
After Christmas we might be going up north, somewhere with a beach. Since my Papa knows someone up there we might be able to get in free? But I don’t know. We’ll just see what happens!

Prizegiving!!!
Tonight all the year 5's and up would be having their prizegiving. At 7:00 all the kids gathered into the hall. Mr Burt started it with a few notices and then said the prayer.
"Now the first performance is from the SENIOR KAPA HAKA group!" announced Mr Burt. Everyone started clapping. As they finished the performance, I started to feel nervous. Next was the year 5's!
Now it was time for the Year 5 prizes! Mrs Squires had told us who was going to get prizes, but no one knew what they were getting. First he gave all the awards for 100% attendance, citizenship and more. Tyla ( my friend ) got citizenship! I got a distinction award! Finally it was time for the ACADEMIC AWARDS! “In 3rd place is Jonita! ( my other friend) ” announced Mr Burt. “Woohoo Go Nita” I shouted. In 2nd place was Isara. “And in 1st place is Kaycee!” said Mr Burt. I could hear my dad cheering for me.
Next was our item! As I stood in my spot I could see my mum and brother trying to get a photo of me! As the music started to play I started to pose. Nearly forgetting the moves I looked at Mele and watched her. Our song was a remix one with EVERYBODY DANCE NOW, BABE BABE, JUMP JUMP etc. Finishing the performance with a back to back pose, I stared at everyone else. After this, the year 6’s got their prizes and it took a while!
Finally it was time for their item. They did a Jabbawockeez dance to a Michael Jackson dance. It was really cool. I liked it when the middle row picked up the white masks! It was awesome.
One of my favourite items was the intermediate one. The did the Dougie to Teach Me how to Dougie song. They were good! Jonty had the microphone and was going round singing it.
It was fun at the prizegiving! I also liked getting the awards. I hope next year it’ll be even better!

Netbook Reflection
At the start of the year we got given our Netbooks that we have paid for. It has been a year since then and now we have to write a reflection on having our Netbooks instead of pencils and paper.
Some positive things about having a Netbook is that we get to type instead of writing. Another thing is that it is easier to find all of our documents, because it is online in our google docs. Plus we have a school email so our teacher can send us our worksheets and new tasks. We also get to take them home with us!
Although there are quite a few positives, there are also some annoying and negative things like how the Internet disconnects sometimes. Something I really don’t like is that we have to re-imaged and that means all our stuff like pictures get lost. Some people also have problems with there Netbooks so, we’re lucky to have a guy named Nevyn fix our us. He’s like our technician.
Using the Netbooks this year was a new experience. But it was also fun! I can’t wait until next year!

Election Billboards!
At Extension we got the chance to make our own Billboard. We could choose whether to make up our own Party or to choose one in the competition. I chose Labour because I had been learning about it for the past week.
I thought that Labour was going to win. Unfortunately they didn't. Instead National won.
I like Labour because they have some really great policies like helping kids get a good future and to have a good education. One of their motto's is "It's About The Kids"
I predicted that Labour was going to win but I was wrong. Did you know that Labour is the longest running parliamentary party in New Zealand.
One thing that is really important to the elections is MMP. MMP means Mixed Member Proportional.

My Cousins
These are my cousins that live over in Australia. Their names are Mihi-Terina, Honey, and Shayanne. They came over to NZ for Christmas one time. I got a massive puzzle that has 1000 pieces, but I still haven't even tried it yet. I'm not good at puzzles.
Once Mihi-Terina came and stayed at my house and we had a sleepover. We slept in the lounge with our kittens, Santa and Claus. It was fun. I can't wait too see them this Christmas!

Hills and Stars!
As we boarded the bus, I said to myself “I can’t wait until we get to Maungakiekie!” Room 14 were going to Stardome! We were going to learn more about our solar system.
Arriving at the entrance to Stardome, I jumped out the door and onto the nice green grass. We sat in a nice grassy spot and ate our lunch. After finishing, we had to WALK up Maungakiekie. "Oh..." ,I groaned as I packed up my stuff.
Each step I took I felt like had just finished Cross Country!!! My legs were exhausted! “I’m tired!” I moaned.
Finally we had reached the top of Maungakiekie. I was so glad. Being buffeted by the wind was so NICE. There were magnificent views of Auckland. We then walked to the crater.
Once we got to the crater we had a play around. I walked around the outside watching everyone playing with the rocks. Looking down at the lava rocks and rocks, I thought "That look's FUN". Sliding down the steep hill, covered with sticks and poo, I tried to avoid the poo. My friends aunty was then looking for my friend so I helped. Guess where she was??? Behind the trees and playing a game with a little pond she’d found and some rocks. She was trying to get the rocks in the pond. Next I went up top more and saw Isara peeking in a hole. I went over. He saw me. He said “ There’s rabbits in there!” “Are you sure?” I said back. When he put his hand in he said there was something fluffy. Soon later he found a head skeleton. "A birds one???" I thought. Following everyone down to the middle of the crater they TRIED to make a fire. "Time to go!" yelled Mrs Squires.
Walking back down to the park, I whispered to my friend "What do you have for lunch?" She said she had some yum sticks that were coated with strawberry icing.
Finally going to the Stardome our teacher was Petra. She was our host. First she took us in a theatre.
We watched a movie called THE CARDBOARD ROCKET. There were reclining seats. The screen looked so realistic. We started to explore the planets. We learnt alot. After this we looked around more.
We found a mirror which was curved and distorted. It looked really different.
I really liked going to Stardome. I hope to go there again. I also learnt alot more about some planets.

Eating Comets!
"Today we are going to make an Ice Cream Comet", announced Mrs Squires. "YUM!" I thought to myself, "Ice Cream!". Room 14 was so happy! Mrs Squires said we were making it for our Writing Experience. That meant we had to write afterwards!
Eagerly waiting for Mrs Squires to start, she suddenly pulled out a plastic bag and some biscuits. She tipped the biscuits into the bag and then selected some people to crush them. The people chosen used the 1000's blocks. Before we knew it they were shattered into pieces! Once they were crushed Mrs Squires got out some spinkles.
Sprinkles! She carefully tipped the chocolate sprinkles into the bag with the crushed biscuits. Along with it went some 100's and 1000's. As I watched the sprnikles getting poured in, I thought to myself "Ohh... This is going to be soooo NICE!".
Now time for the Ice Cream! I held my hand out. I hoped it wasn't going to be that cold. As I scooped it out of the scooper and guess what! It was icy cold! Quickly rushing over to the dust (crushed biscuits and sprinkles) I dropped it in it. Soon it was coated with dust. My friend passed me a cone and I headed outside with Mele.
Me and my friend were slurping away. Our hands were a mess but we didn't care! It was worth it! The dust was nice! ( crushed up biscuits and sprinkles ) I kept licking and slurping. It was DELICIOUS! With a chocolatey flavour and biscuits and sprinkles! "Mmmm.... I want another one!" I said to myself. Once we finish our Ice Cream we had to sit inside. Luckily there was still some Ice Cream left and whoever came in nicely got seconds! I got seconds!
Now the Ice Cream was finished and everyone was rumaging throught the dust for more! The writing experience was FUN and YUM! I hope some other day we can have Ice Cream again! It was DELICIOUS!

Guy Fawkes!!!
It was a spectacular night filled with booms and amazing coulors! My family and I had a box of fireworks to light. My brother had to come out of his room to light them . He didn't want to though. I couldn't wait until the big ones that go up and BOOM! We waited on the deck. As the first one shot up I thought to myself " Oh... The NOISY ones!!!" They were loud and it was smokey! My mum and baby cousin were inside watching through the window.
My favourite fireworks are the ones that spin on the ground. My cousin and brother were calling them beyblades! We hung them up on the washing line and watched them spin. It was like a shower!
After they were finished we used the sparklers! My nana bought lots of packets and some of the looong ones. It was ages until they were finished, but once they were it was around 10 o' clock.
I really like watching the pretty coulors!

Cross Country!
Have you ever been in a Cross Country race? If you haven't or if you don't know what Cross Country is, then read this. Cross country is long distance running race over a wide area. Our whole school got involved in the Cross Country running competition on Wednesday.
I was sitting peacefully outside my class when suddenly, "Ring!!!" The bell rang. It was time to go to Cross Country! Unfortunately it was alright weather for running. I don’t really like Cross Country.
"GO!", shouted Mr. Burt. I started jogging at a steady pace so I wouldn’t use up my energy early on in the race. When a group of us reached the narrow shell-covered path, some of us had to stop. Instead of slowing down I weaved through the crowd. I eventually caught up to Porscha.
I was still jogging when we got to Lepa. Then I slowed down a bit, I was beginning to feel a bit tired. Suddenly out of nowhere Lepa yelled, “Hurry up!” He also had a big stick that he was pretending to hit us with. “Hurry up!” He yelled again. So I moved out of the way and let Porscha through. “Hurry up!”, he yelled at her while jokingly poking the stick in the middle of her back. So she ran off and I followed.
As I gasped for breath I saw that we had nearly finished the race! With my last little bit of energy I raced up the hill past the cows. Once I got in the gate Ane and I raced each other to the end. My body was so so tired! It felt like I couldn’t feel my legs. Exhausted and drained of energy, I sat down next to Porscha and flopped down to the ground.
Afterwards I realised that I had actually enjoyed the race, even though it was really hard. I can’t wait to see what the next one looks like! I hope to come maybe 3rd, 2nd or even 1st in next years one.

A Whale In Trouble
Humpback whales are a very special kind of whale. Known well because of their lovely song and spectacular breaching.
While motoring out in the beautiful and glassy sea of Cortez a whale researcher, Michael Fishbach, and his family encountered a rare opportunity. They had got the chance to save one of these young humpback whale, close to death.
It was valentine’s day, Michael Fishbach and his family found a humpback which appeared to be dead. Their were no signs of life. Suddenly the whale forcefully exhaled! It was still alive though close to death.
Before long Michael Fishbach noticed that the whale was severely entangled. Frightened and fatigued the whale looked like it had not long to live. They knew that they had to do something.
1 small knife was all they had to cut the net off. Cutting furiously they finally got one of the pectoral fins out. After about 1 hour of exhausting work they finally freed Valentina(the whale).
Once free, the whale pleased the family with a magnificent display of tail slaps and more! There were about 40 breaches! Valentina kept the family watching for about 1 hour. Then the family rode back to shore, remembering the day they saved a humpback whale.
I think the family would of thought it was the best valentines day ever!

Opening Game
Rugby fever is here and to kick off the night New Zealand and Tonga go head to head. With a great to the game the teams get straight in there. Soon to start me and my brother quickly grabbed our flags! "It's starting!" yelled my dad. I quickly raced in and jumped on the couch. Even thought I'm not a big fan of rugby I still do watch it. It started with our haka and Tonga's chant. For this game I did think we were going to win... but still the score was 41-10!
Delicious Cakes!
Do you have a favourite cake flavour? My favourite is CHEESECAKE!
The way the creamy taste melts in my mouth!...mmm.....
Anyway what's your favourite?
Here in New Zealand we have cake normally for celebrations. Like birthdays, Weddings, fancy occasions but sometimes if we're lucky we just get have it. Unlike my family we hardly ever have cake! Luckily 2 birthdays are coming up!
Banana cake, chocolate cake, vanilla cake, strawberry cake. Wow! There are a lot of different flavours! YUM!
My Awesome Duffy Books!
These are the Duffy books that I got this year. Every year we get free books all thanks to the Bucklands Beach Lions Club!
This year I chose two books called "I'm Not A Supermouse!" and "Tangaroa's gift.
I'm Not A Supermouse! was written by a person named Geronimo Stilton. Geronimo Stilton and Thea Stilton are some of my favourite authors. Anyway this book is about a mouse who runs a newspaper and always has different story's to tell. The first part is about him getting stuck in a elevator for a day or 2! Once found his super-sporty friend named Bruce Hyena drags Geronimo on a serious outrageous adventure to toughen Geronimo up! Also Geronimo is such a fraidy mouse!
My second story is a maori culture one. It is called Tangaroa's gift written by Mere Whaanga-Schollum. Once is the bottom of the sea there lived a sad lonely sea creature named paua. Tangaroa decided to give him a special gift. He gave him a...???

Badminton
Every Thursday room 14 go to the hall to have P.E. We get to play Badminton with a pro. She teaches how to hit and serve the shuttle properly.
We had to learn how to keep the shuttle airborne first. "Oh no!" I thought. I didn't think I was going to be good at this. Doing this meant learning how to hit it properly. We practised how to serve and how to hit it with our partner, trying to keep and volley of hits. It was tricky to aim so our hits went all over the place. I served one more time with a rapid hit, luckily my partner hit it. “Yes!” I yelled! But then, she hit it sideways! I stretched out my arm and reached towards the shuttle but. "NO!!!" I yelled I missed. But then...
“What was that” I said with a shock. Lorene ( our coach) had blown her whistle. That meant it was time to do something different. She said it was time for a game! For this game we all needed a racket and then had to stand in a long queue. I call this game Hit, Run and Pass. The aim of the game was to be quick when it was your turn and hit the shuttle. Lorene would stand a few lines away from us and hit shuttles constantly, we had to hit, run to the end of the queue and then pass it to the last person without a racket. If you missed the shuttle then your racket got relinquished and then you had to keep the rhythm going. “Keep hitting it”, I said to myself.
The next game was sort of like Badminton Volley Ball. We had 2 nets so the girls got 1 net and the boys got 1 net. We stood in a line and whoever didn’t hit it when it was on their side of the court or went for it but didn’t get it, you were out and the next person went and took your spot. Finally it was my turn. I jumped into Raeleen’s spot and served the shuttle over the net and right in front of Mele. “She fiercely hit it back but then Chloe missed it just by a little bit! I served it again and guess what I missed the shuttle! I was out. Next in, me out. You just had to keep going and going until the time was up. I think me and Tyla probably stayed in the game the longest!
I had fun playing these games and practising new skills. It was really fun! I hope to go again!

The Digestive System Extension
In the past few weeks we have been learning about a healthy persons body. We have been looking at what our food does when we eat it and what it goes through. Next we might look at what a unhealthy persons body.
Our extension group had to get into a group but we all had to have different body systems. So our group was Me, Jonita, Isara, Crusader, Makerita and Wyatt. My part was the stomach and in the stomach it is where the acid is mixed with food. Find out more by watching our movie! We hope you enjoy!

Rugby History
Do you know how the rugby ball became an oval? Well up until the 1800’s people would use a raw pigs bladder for a rugby ball! Do you know what a pigs bladder is? It is where the pigs urine is! It is unhygienic and also had a disgusting smell! Even thought it was a nonstandard size they would still use it. Once they had got the pigs bladder they would wash it then put their mouths around the hole and blow air into it. But sometimes the would use a pipe. Then that’s what they used for a rugby ball.
In England at a school called Rugby School there was a boy named William Webb Ellis. One day while playing soccer he picked up the ball, in fine disregard for the rules, and ran to get a try. That was the day rugby was born, well sort of.

The Auckland Snow
The Liver
Do you know what the liver is? Well, the liver is where the food gets broken down. It gets broken down so the food can proceed. But the liver doesn't just have 1 job, it has over 500 jobs! Another job is warming the blood.
The liver is also known as the biggest organ in our body. Some people say it can look like a small melon. In a humans body it is on the right-hand side.

Term 3 Immersion Assembly
Today is the 1st day of Term 3 and on the 1st day of term we always have an Immersion Assembly. Do you know what an Immersion Assembly is? Well it is where the teachers normally dress-up and do a performance based on the Term topic. Our topic is “Keep Your Eye On The Ball”.
“Ireland!!!” yelled Mr Jacobson while I was walking in. He was dressed in a green cape, green wig, green shirt, green pants and he even painted his face. Also when I walked in I saw Litia and Rita carrying a box each with paper bags in them. I wondered what they were?
As soon as I sat down I saw fizzy drinks and chips. I wondered what they were for? Soon Mr Burt told us what was in the bags and why the fizzy and chips were there. In the bags were hot chips and a sausage. “mmm.... Yum!” I said to myself. But to get 1 of these things you had to have a ticket and the way you got the ticket was to sit up nicely. When you got a ticket you put your hand up and waited until 1 of the vendors came and handed you either a packet of chips, a drink or hot chips and sausage. Unfortunately I didn’t get a ticket. Anyway after that Mr Burt announced that it was time for Team 1 then Team 2 and then Team 3.
Team 3 performed a weet-bix eating competition. Mrs Barks was the host of the competition. She called out the 3 countries which were France, New Zealand and Canada. Next they had to find a partner from the audience and they would help them. Since the competitors weren't allowed to use their hands the helpers had to spoon the weet-bix into their mouths for them. Guess who won. New Zealand!
My favourite act was Team 3. I thought all the acts were good. I still wish I got 1 of the tickets and got something to eat during assembly.

Motat
On Wednesday the 6th of July we went to Motat to learn more about inventions. Did you know that M.O.T.A.T stands for Museum of Technology and Transportation. When we arrived at Motat we went to a place that we called the classroom because that’s where we ate our lunch. After we ate our morning tea, room 14 went and had a wonder around while room 13 stayed with Stacey.
The first place we went was the arcade games. They had Donkey-Kong, Street Fighter, Pac-Man and more! The games were so fun but unfortunately we only got a little bit of time to play the games.
Another place we went was the Mirror Maze! When I went in the Mirror Maze I collided into Jorja. I fell down. As I got back up I looked at the mirrors and noticed that there was endless reflections.
Suddenly we had to go back to the classroom and have some lunch. After we had lunch we went to the Tactile Dome!
Nervously arriving at the Tactile Dome, because I haven’t been in the Tactile Dome for a long time, I sat down next to Jorja. There were 2 people at the Tactile Dome explained how it was going to work. After that the first people to enter it was Tyla, Jonita, Porscha and Raeleen. Outside the Tactile Dome they had a speaker, so we could hear them. Jorja, Hayley, Ashlee and myself were probably the 7th or 8th people to go in. Nervously going into the pitch black maze I carefully made my way up and down the pitch black maze. (They were in front of us) Suddenly I stopped and said “Who’s that?”. The other girls started to scream! “Why do you have to scream!!” I yelled. “It’s only the boys”. Very loudly we caught up to the boys. This meant we had to wait a bit for them to get out of the way a bit. But I guess they were going the same way as us. While we were in there we had to go down slides, over nets, through tunnels and also once we went down a slide then came out on a soft mattress. Finally we made it through. I had FUN!!!
Telecommunication was the next place we went. Telecommunication was a place where they had lots of old phones and they had the morse code. You can even ring your next door neighbours number. There are lots of rotary phones.
Suddenly, again, we had to go back to the classroom and switch with room 13. So they went to wonder around and we went to another place with Stacey. We had to go to another place witch had a lot of old things that people accidentally made, made to solve a problem and made because of someone might have a passion for something. One thing one person made was a automatic vacuum. This was made to solve a problem. The problem was that you might have to go somewhere but you also have to do your vacuuming. This person made a do-it-yourself vacuum. It wasn’t that good though.
Soon it was time to go back to School. I had fun but it was a really long day. I learnt alot of different things when we went to Motat.

Stanley Steamer
When the American twins, Francis and Freelan Stanley attended a local fair, a French inventor, who had invented a steam-driven car, was demonstrating it. Interestingly after seeing this the brothers decided to invent a steam car of their own. They would call it the Stanley Steamer. The Stanley Steamer was the best-known and best-selling car from 1896-1924. Between 1899-1905 the Stanley Steamer outsold all the gasoline cars. Did you know that in 1906 the land speed record was broke by a Stanley Steamer driven by Fred Marriott. The speed was 204 kilometers per hour!
The Stanley Steamer had positives and negatives. One positive thing was if something went wrong with you Stanley Steamer you could take it straight back. One more thing was that compared to most of the other cars at the time it was the fastest most easiest to start and cleanest. But other manufactures spread rumors about the Stanley Steamer blowing up and killing people. It wasn’t just good things going around there were quite a few negatives.
