Art Critique

During the week I have been working on a painting by Vincent Van Gogh. I have attempted to copy his Blossoming Almonds (1890) using his style and techniques. Finally finishing my painting it was time to critique.

Although there are few differences, I think my sky has a similar effect. The dark shadings of the blue, makes the brown tree branches stand out. In some places it is dark blue but in other bits of the sky it is light blue. This is something that I think I have done well to match Van Gogh’s original painting.

I think the flowers have the most difference in my painting. They don’t have the same colour and shape. The colour of my flowers are white and it doesn’t really match the original painting.

Painted while in the hospital,  this was for Theo’s (Vincent’s brother) son. His name was Vincent. Also, you can clearly see it is in a Japanese style.

There are few elements in this painting. My favourite part is the sky. The part I would work on is the flowers.

I would improve my work by fixing up the flowers. Firstly by making the right colour. In my painting they are plain white and in the original one they are a light yellow colour. Secondly, I would make the flowers look like they had petals. To be honest, I think I was a bit lazy on the flowers.

It was very difficult to sketch and paint Blossoming Almonds. Overall I think I did a pretty good job.

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh was a very poor man. He had many jobs before he started working as an artist. His life was filled with anger and sadness.

One time when he got upset he cut part of ear off and sent it to his girlfriend. She didn’t like it though so she sent it back.

Van Gogh died at the age of 37 from a gunshot. He shot himself after he had done the Sunflowers painting. 2 days later he died.

Vincent Van Gogh was normally very hungry because he would spend all his money on paint.  He got really unhealthy and sick.

This man drew and painted lots of paintings. They were based on his feeling and his emotions. Most of the time he was angry and upset.

While he was alive all of the art he did were worth nothing because no one really liked it. After he passed away everyone started to realise how good his work was. Nowadays people would pay millions to have his artwork.
