Mini Tattoo Project

For our task we were to create two tattoo designs. The first one being a cultural one and the second being one that represented yourself. The presentation above includes the tattoos and an explanation for each I created.

Year 8 Camp!

A few weeks ago, the year 8’s were lucky enough to go and camp at the Marsden Bay Christian Camp in Ruakaka. It was so much fun, I wish it had lasted longer! Over the four days we spent there, I got to enjoy relaxing, many activities and more.

Day 1 wasn’t that bad but it surely wasn’t my favourite. After taking a 2 hour bus drive, we stopped at Langs Bay and started our hike towards Waipu Cove. Ms Squires had planned what was supposed to be an easy walk, but due to the weather it wasn’t so. The track was not only slippery but very narrow which made it harder for everyone to avoid plummeting to their deaths. But luckily, everyone made it to the end.

For me, my favourite day was day 3. We did many different activities such as a fire pit cooking challenge, archery, a confidence course, frisbee golf and kayaking! Then to finish the night off, we all gathered around a campfire and sang songs.

But overall, my highlight from camp was probably spending time together as a whole year 8 group (instead of just our team groups). Also, getting to know other people that I don’t usually hang out with.

Tangle Explanation

A celtic knot is a piece of art that has been interwoven to create the illusion that it has no beginning or end. Having that class 1 and class 5 have combined (Panuba), this particular style of art is great as a collaborative project, as everyone can contribute with their own design.

It’s a great idea to do some planning and researching before you start draft-sketching. Look at different designs, patterns, colours and symbols you could include in your piece. But remember to include something that represents you.

Choosing only a few colours that contrast each other would be better than using a lot. Bright and bold colours will also make your artwork stand out more.

Placing all the pieces in the right place of the tangle can be quite confusing, so it's a good idea to label them. This way, it'll be easier to assemble the celtic knot.

My Avatar

Self Management has been something we've focused on this year and in my class we have a Self Management Level Board. This board has three levels. Level 1; I need help to manage myself. Level 2; I am able to manage myself but I sometimes go off task. Level 3; I can manage myself well, inside and outside of the classroom.

Above, is my avatar that I have created. I think that I can place myself at Level 3 as I can manage myself well away from the teacher and keep on task.

Day 1 Term 4

The first day of the last term had started and no one was expecting what we had just been informed about. Class 1 and Class 5 were being merged together. Now it was one large class with three teachers.

It was quite surprising to hear that our class would be changing again, and, in a different way. Along with my friends, we've been moved around the school in to other classes ever since last year. But to be merged, didn't bother me very much and it actually ended up being quite a good day.

THANK YOU!

Untitled
Last week Point England School was visited by a group of people from The Variety Club, MOTAT and Johnson and Johnson. They surprised the school with sacks full of presents wrapped up for each kid. Every one of us received a gift and for that we would like to thank them. Of course the presents were perfect as they were buying things for people they didn't even know. But I really appreciate how they took the time to buy us presents for Christmas.

We would like to say a humongous thank you for the presents. Once again I would like to thank The Variety Club, MOTAT and Johnson and Johnson for the great presents. I’m sure everyone will cherish and treasure their gifts given. This surprise definitely made someone’s day. My present was a memo board. THANK YOU!

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was one of the greatest men ever known for being the first black president and also for his ways in changing and making the world a better place. He protested against racism and put an end to apartheid. These are some things that he will definitely be remembered for.

Nelson Mandela was born on July the 18th, 1918 in Mveso, Transkei, South Africa. But he was actually named Rolihlahla Mandela then was called Nelson from his primary school teacher. The primary school he attended was near Qunu. When he was 16, Nelson went to Clarkebury Boarding Institute in Engcobo. He then enrolled at the University College of Fort Hare in Alice but was then expelled a year later for being involved in a student strike.

A few years later in 1942, Nelson joined the African National Congress (ANC) and started to attend their meetings. He played the role of South Africa’s main campaigner for equality but was also involved in the ANC Youth League (ANCYL). A while later, in 1960 the ANC was banned.

Nelson joined 155 others in an arrest and was put on trial for treason in the year 1956. Then in 1962 he was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison for leaving the country without a passport. One of the reasons he left was for military training. The first time he appeared in court was with other members of the ANC for being accused of trying to stop the apartheid. He pleaded not guilty but was sentenced to life in jail. All except 2 spent only 18 years instead of lifetime in jail. Nelson was sent to Robben Island for his sentence.

After 27 years of being in prison Nelson Mandela was released in 1990. A few hours after his release, he promised that he would end the apartheid.
On the May 9th, 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected as the first president of a democratic South Africa.
That same year the ANC was unbanned and he was elected as the Deputy President.

In his later years of his life, he was mainly discharged and admitted time after time into hospital. He spent his 95th birthday in hospital with his family then died on the 5th of December 2013.

Nelson Mandela made a huge difference in the world and that his message definitely reached everyone. He will be remembered by everyone.

CAMP WAS AWESOME!

Camp has just finished and now I am going to tell you about it! Arriving at Camp Bentzon we were greeted by Peter and Erin(they are the people who own Camp Bentzon) The boys also performed a haka.

I couldn't wait until our first activity started but first we had a walk to finish. Walking up the hills for around 2 hours and a half nearly killed me! As soon as we finished we had free time for the rest of the day!!!

Out of all the activities my favourite one was SAILING! Even though it was boring, with not much wind, we still had a whole heap of fun! After we geared up, Peter gave us 20 minutes of instructions, then off we went. Our aim was a boat called Typhoon. After we left the little bit of the bay, the wind started to pick up. We had races and some boys sang songs. Soon we had to get to our next activity.

Heading towards the Abseiling wall, there we met Anita and Camila. They taught us how to abseil. Before I could abseil I had to wait a while but soon it was my turn. Climbing up the metal rings I could feel my stomach turning. Finally I got to the top. Slowly walking back down, I felt like I was floating in air. When I touched the ground I wanted to do it again.

On the last night we had our concert and that is where each group performs. After everyone performed, Mr Jacobsen started to announce the winner... "In 3rd place... Mansion!!! And In 2nd place.... Katz!!! And with 4700 points Kawau and Benzon!!! I was so surprised. Also we have a camp king and queen and this year they were Tyla-Marie and Wyatt and Isara! I had a whole lot of fun! I wish I could go again. Maybe my family and I could go!

The Robbery

Speed walking past the other shops, on a Saturday evening, I wanted to get home quickly before my favourite TV show was on. I had just passed the Dairy, with a drink in my hand,  when I saw something suspicious. There was a man dressed in full black, who stared right into my eyes while he walked closer and closer.

Just as he was about to grab me, I noticed cuts and scars on him. Too frightened to do anything, I saw something move behind him. Trying to move myself from my position I got a quick glimpse of people tied up in the dairy. Thinking to myself... Is that what he’s going to do to me and what is going to do to them afterwards?

While I was still thinking, he grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the shop. Tying me up and placing tape on my mouth I then realised what this was. Another man was behind the counter frantically grabbing the money.

Since the robber still looked like he had a while until he would go, I decided to try and find something to cut my rope. Trying to get a hold of something, I noticed that one of the robbers was looking at me. Slowly putting myself into my original position, I stay frozen until I see a car pull up outside.

With the money, the robbers start to head out the door to the car. “What about us??!!” I wonder. Suddenly I hear loud noises and bright lights. Looking towards the window I think, WE’RE SAVED! Then the robbers run back in and cause more trouble.

One of them pulled out a gun and grabs a kid telling them to let him go or else! Closing my eyes, I repeat to myself, “It’s all going to be alright, It’s all going to be alright”. Feeling someone's hand on my shoulder I get a little shock. “You can go now” said the person. I looked up to see if the robbers still had the kid but they didn't. They were handcuffed and in the police car. I got up, still shaking, and started walking out of the shop back home.

Luckily everyone ended up safe. The cops took the robbers away and everyone got back on with their life. I still didn't figure out who called the cops though.
