A Whale In Trouble

Humpback whales are a very special kind of whale. Known well because of their lovely song and spectacular breaching.

While motoring out in the beautiful and glassy sea of Cortez a whale researcher, Michael Fishbach, and his family encountered a rare opportunity. They had got the chance to save one of these young humpback whale, close to death.

It was valentine’s day, Michael Fishbach and his family found a humpback which appeared to be dead. Their were no signs of life. Suddenly the whale forcefully exhaled! It was still alive though close to death.

Before long Michael Fishbach noticed that the whale was severely entangled. Frightened and fatigued the whale looked like it had not long to live. They knew that they had to do something.

1 small knife was all they had to cut the net off. Cutting furiously they finally got one of the pectoral fins out. After about 1 hour of exhausting work they finally freed Valentina(the whale).

Once free, the whale pleased the family with a magnificent display of tail slaps and more! There were about 40 breaches! Valentina kept the family watching for about 1 hour. Then the family rode back to shore, remembering the day they saved a humpback whale.

I think the family would of thought it was the best valentines day ever!

Opening Game

Rugby fever is here and to kick off the night New Zealand and Tonga go head to head. With a great to the game the teams get straight in there. Soon to start me and my brother quickly grabbed our flags! "It's starting!" yelled my dad. I quickly raced in and jumped on the couch. Even thought I'm not a big fan of rugby I still do watch it. It started with our haka and Tonga's chant. For this game I did think we were going to win... but still the score was 41-10!

Delicious Cakes!

Do you have a favourite cake flavour? My favourite is CHEESECAKE!
The way the creamy taste melts in my mouth!...mmm.....
Anyway what's your favourite?

Here in New Zealand we have cake normally for celebrations. Like birthdays, Weddings, fancy occasions but sometimes if we're lucky we just get have it. Unlike my family we hardly ever have cake! Luckily 2 birthdays are coming up!

Banana cake, chocolate cake, vanilla cake, strawberry cake. Wow! There are a lot of different flavours! YUM!

My Awesome Duffy Books!

These are the Duffy books that I got this year. Every year we get free books all thanks to the Bucklands Beach Lions Club!

This year I chose two books called "I'm Not A Supermouse!" and "Tangaroa's gift.

I'm Not A Supermouse! was written by a person named Geronimo Stilton. Geronimo Stilton and Thea Stilton are some of my favourite authors. Anyway this book is about a mouse who runs a newspaper and always has different story's to tell. The first part is about him getting stuck in a elevator for a day or 2! Once found his super-sporty friend named Bruce Hyena drags Geronimo on a serious outrageous adventure to toughen Geronimo up! Also Geronimo is such a fraidy mouse!

My second story is a maori culture one. It is called Tangaroa's gift written  by Mere Whaanga-Schollum. Once is the bottom of the sea there lived a sad lonely sea creature named paua. Tangaroa decided to give him a special gift. He gave him a...???

Badminton

Every Thursday room 14 go to the hall to have P.E. We get to play Badminton with a pro. She teaches how to hit and serve the shuttle properly.

We had to learn how to keep the shuttle airborne first. "Oh no!" I thought. I didn't think I was going to be good at this. Doing this meant learning how to hit it properly. We practised how to serve and how to hit it with our partner, trying to keep and volley of hits. It was tricky to aim so our hits went all over the place. I served one more time with a rapid hit, luckily my partner hit it. “Yes!” I yelled! But then, she hit it sideways! I stretched out my arm and reached towards the shuttle but. "NO!!!" I yelled I missed. But then...

“What was that” I said with a shock. Lorene ( our coach) had blown her whistle. That meant it was time to do something different. She said it was time for a game! For this game we all needed a racket and then had to stand in a long queue. I call this game Hit, Run and Pass. The aim of the game was to be quick when it was your turn and hit the shuttle. Lorene would stand a few lines away from us and hit shuttles constantly, we had to hit, run to the end of the queue and then pass it to the last person without a racket. If you missed the shuttle then your racket got relinquished and then you had to keep the rhythm going. “Keep hitting it”, I said to myself.

The next game was sort of like Badminton Volley Ball. We had 2 nets so the girls got 1 net and the boys got 1 net. We stood in a line and whoever didn’t hit it when it was on their side of the court or went for it but didn’t get it, you were out and the next person went and took your spot. Finally it was my turn. I jumped into Raeleen’s spot and served the shuttle over the net and right in front of Mele. “She fiercely hit it back but then Chloe missed it just by a little bit! I served it again and guess what I missed the shuttle! I was out. Next in, me out. You just had to keep going and going until the time was up. I think me and Tyla probably stayed in the game the longest!

I had fun playing these games and practising new skills. It was really fun! I hope to go again!
