Writing Sample

This is my writing sample for Term 2, 2014.

The sun shone brightly as Kisha rushes down the path, dragging her older sister, Kara, behind her. “HURRY UP!!!!” she yells as she runs towards the beach, leaving Kara behind.

“Aaaah!”. Kara jumped, surprised. She peered around, looking for her sister, but she was no longer in view. Kara ran to the edge of the beach and sighed camly, starting to giggle. Kisha had tripped and rolled down the sand dunes.

Laughing, Kara jumped down and helped her up. “I tripped over that stupid thing!” she said, pointing at a glassy object peeking out of the sand. It’s an hourglass. Kisha picked it up and flung it against a rock, annoyed.

The glass shattered and the sand slid down the sides of the rock. Suddenly the sand beneath them started to disappear and create a tunnel of a sort. Kara and Kisha sank into the deep hole quickly. “WHAT'S HAPPENING!?” they yelled as the slid down the everlasting seeming tunnel.

Finally, they hit a solid rock floor. The only light source was a flaming torch.

Travis and Sensei Chang: The Misunderstanding

With wind blowing against his back, Travis stretched his aching arms and grabbed onto a ledge of the treacherous mountain. Struggling to the reach the point of his destination, his straining arm slipped off the unsteady rocks that were bound to break. He reached the top of the lofty peak, felt so relieved. “Finally” Travis thought to himself as a bead of sweat rolled down his forehead.

Trudging through the thick snow, he made his way up the icy steps to find a hefty door. He lifted his hand and knocked. Clanking chains echoed throughout the dojo. Creaking open, there before Travis’s eyes stood a very tall Sensei Chang.

Travis stood there speechless, twiddling with his fingers. To show respect, he bowed and smiled. The sensei stood there with one eyebrow raised. Travis felt as if Chang was staring into his soul, his penetrating stare petrified him. Then the sensei pointed away to his right ever so strictly. SLAM! The door closed shut.

Disappointed, Travis’s shoulder drooped and his head fell. Looking down to the ground, he closed his eyes and sat down.  “He just doesn’t realize how awesome I really am, I just have to prove it” thought Travis. Day and night, he meditated until he opened one eye and peeped a look. Standing there in front of him was the sensei. Travis felt so much more confident, he was definitely expecting to get in. But to his surprise, once again Chang pointed to the right side of him.

“What a waste of my time” Travis whispered to himself. With his head held down he stood up and dragged himself away.  Looking out to the huge mountains, he then realizes something. “I did not just climb these huge big mountain and meditate all day and night to find myself being rejected by an old long bearded man”. Clenching his fists, he turned around and BAM! He kicked the door down and stepped back into position.

Sensei Chang couldn’t believe what just had happened. In his martial arts stance, he challenged Chang. Once again, the Sensei instantly pointed to his right. Taking the chance to look where he was pointing, Travis saw a sign that read: Use side entrance. “Oh” Travis released. “Hehe” he chuckled, embarrassed.

THE END!

A Short Narrative

It was a cold, dark and gloomy night. I stumbled upon an abandoned hut deep in the heart of the forest. I was just about to enter the hut when suddenly I hear a crackling sound behind me.

Scared to find out what it was I flicked on my torch and slowly turned around. Finding that there were two small eyes staring right at me, I tried to stay as still as a stick. “It could be anything” I thought to myself.

The creature stood and stared for at least five minutes before it decided to walk closer to me. Making my nerves shiver up my spine, I slowly stepped back towards the hut.

“Just stay calm” I repeated to myself “Just stay calm”. The small creature was still walking towards me before it suddenly stopped and screeched at the sound of a branch snapping. “It was only me” I whispered.

Taking no more chances to with this small creature, I decided to shine the light to find out what it was. Slowly pointing the torch towards the small eyes I gasped to find that it was just a lost and scared baby bear.

Starry Starry Night Critique

Starry Starry Night was painted by the unforgotten Vincent Van Gogh. This piece of art was painted in 1889 while VIncent Van Gogh was in France. It is around 73 by 92 cm big, about the same size as the Sunflowers painting.

Shining gold stars are painted onto the blue exaggerated sky. Blue is the main colour. Glowing yellow spots stand out from the dark purple village.

In the foreground, the bold brushstrokes make the tall curving cypress tree look like it’s moving. Almost like a flame. The church, houses, hills and much more are also in the background.

There are many objects in this painting. Two objects that I noticed that stand out, are the cypress tree and the church. I think they stand out because they both have a tall point.

This is one of Van Gogh’s many famous paintings and it is very nice. In fact, this is one of the most famous paintings he has done. If I had enough money, I would probably buy this painting but I think this won’t happen.

Sunflowers By Van Gogh

The Sunflowers painted (with oil paint) by the well known Vincent Van Gogh is very very valuable. It is around 73 by 92 cm. In 1888, when it was painted, it was worth nothing, but 99 years later in 1987 it was sold for $40 000 000.

If you were to run your hand over this famous and cheerful painting, which probably wouldn’t happen, you would feel that the texture is very rough. When Van Gogh painted this he would have glumps of paint. He sometimes used a knife when he was painting.

The main colour in this painting is yellow, it is a very happy and cheerful colour. Cheerful and happy was exactly what he was feeling at this time. He also used the colours red and orange.

When I look at this Sunflower painting I think of something happy and cheerful because of the bright and sunny colours. Also this painting looks very realistic with its different ages of sunflowers. This painting has a lot of positives, I can’t even think of anything negative!

As everyone knows Van Gogh is very famous for his artwork. Van Gogh painted this piece of art to hang up in Paul Gauguin's room. Paul Gauguin was one of Van Gogh best friends and he was coming to stay with him. This made him very glad.

2 years later after he had painted the Sunflowers, he died. People say he shot himself and two days later he died. While he was alive his art was worth only a few dollars. After this happened everyone realised that his artwork was AMAZING. Now his paintings are worth millions!
